Aftercare for Restored Wooden Furniture

Restored wooden furniture deserves thoughtful care to preserve its beauty and integrity for years to come. Whether it is a cherished heirloom or a newly revived piece, here is how to keep it looking its best:

Cleaning Tips

• Dust regularly using a soft, lint-free cloth such as microfibre. Avoid feather dusters, which can scratch delicate finishes.

• Spot clean gently with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Never soak the wood, as excess moisture can cause warping or damage to the finish.

• Do not use harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or silicone-based sprays. These can strip finishes or leave residues that attract dust.

• Polish sparingly with a natural wax or oil-based product, ideally recommended by your restorer. Over-polishing can lead to a build-up of wax and waring the finish away.

Environmental Considerations

• Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, cracking, or uneven discoloration.

• Maintain stable humidity. Extreme dryness or dampness can cause wood to expand, contract, or split. Aim for a consistent indoor climate, especially in older homes.

• Avoid placing near heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces, which can dry out the wood and compromise joints or finishes.

• Use protective pads under lamps, vases, or ornaments to prevent scratches and water rings.

Every piece of restored furniture is unique, with its own history, materials, and finish. If you are unsure about how to care for your item, or if it shows signs of damage, please seek advice. Proper care ensures your furniture continues to tell its story for generations to come.

Aftercare for Newly Upholstered Furniture

New upholstery brings fresh life to cherished furniture, but each fabric type requires its own care to maintain its texture, colour, and durability. Below is a guide to help you protect your investment and enjoy your piece for years to come.

General Care Tips

• Where possible rotate cushions and avoid prolonged pressure on one area to maintain shape and even wear.

• Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and fibre breakdown.

• Avoid harsh chemicals and always test any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first.

• Professional cleaning is recommended for removal of stains.

• Avoid contact with sharp objects or rough clothing that may crush or mark the material

Fabric

•  Vacuum regularly using a soft brush attachment to remove dust and prevent dirt from settling into the fibres.

• Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing, which can spread stains or damage the pile.

Leather

• Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Use leather conditioner every 6 months to prevent drying or cracking.

• Avoid placing leather near radiators or in overly dry environments.

• Clean spills quickly, especially liquids, which can stain or warp the surface.

Every upholstered piece is unique, and cleaning methods may vary depending on the fabric blend, backing, and treatment. If in doubt, or if your furniture requires deep cleaning or stain removal, seek advice from a professional upholstery cleaner. Proper care ensures your furniture remains a source of comfort and style for years to come.
